Challenge 52
One exercise every week, for a year. That is the whole structure.
Most people do not stop drawing because they lack talent. They stop because they open a sketchbook, cannot decide what to work on, and close it again. Challenge 52 takes that decision away from you. Every week you get one exercise, a short demo showing you what to aim for, and a group of people doing the exact same thing that week.
It has been running for three years. A new group starts at week 1 every week, so there is no cohort to wait for and nothing to catch up on.
The seven fundamentalsWhat you are actually training
Every exercise targets one of seven fundamentals. They build on each other, which is why the order matters.
Shape
The 2D design of what you draw. The silhouette, and how areas are divided in 2D space.
Form
The 3D structure. How people, objects and animals are described in space, felt as solid volumes.
Perspective
The spatial system. Where forms sit relative to each other. Closer, farther, overlapping.
Visual coordination
The accuracy of your observations and measurements. Proportions, distances, alignments.
Gesture
The flow, movement and intent. The energy of what you are drawing, felt rather than measured.
Value
The structure of brighter and darker values, and how that structure describes form and depth.
Colour
The organization of hue and saturation. It sits on top of value, it does not replace it.
Clarity is not an eighth fundamental. It is the filter you apply to all seven. It is the degree to which your intent is understood without confusion, so the viewer never has to guess what they are looking at. You do not add clarity at the end. You refine each fundamental until it reads.
Anyone who is tired of guessing
If you have been drawing a while and feel like you are not getting better, this is built for you. Same if you are starting from nothing and want a path instead of a pile of tutorials you never finish.
It is not a course. There is nothing to binge. One week, one exercise, and a few thousand people working on the same thing at the same time.
Free. No card needed.
